Paris Jackson

There's a new Paris in town! At the end of the Michael Jackson Memorial, all three of MJ's kids were onstage, along with the rest of the Jackson Family. And Paris Jackson spoke: (click on the photo above for the video)

"Ever since I was born, Daddy was the best father you can ever imagine; and I just wanted to say that I love him so much."

Hero to Hedo

Just a few weeks ago, Hedo Turkoglu was being hailed as one of the heroes of the magical Magic playing in the NBA Finals, when no one would have predicted it.

But what happened next can be deemed a downfall of one hero to just another Hedo. At least for me, and some others.

Istanbul Jazz Boats

The most interesting part of The NY Times article about the upcoming 16th annual Istanbul Jazz Festival is that some of this unique jazz experience will take place on the mighty strait separating Europe and Asia, on the nostalgic 'vapur' boats.

On the five-hour Bosphorus 'caz boat' cruise, fans will enjoy cool sounds, as well as a stopover for lunch at Anadolu Kavagi. Sounds like fun!

Between this past month's Istanbul International Music Festival and the upcoming month's Istanbul Jazz Festival, Istanbul proves to be a haven for music lovers, a perfect combination of rich music, exquisite historic venues, and warm summer nights. Here's a more thorough wrap-up.

Farrah and Michael

They say it occurs in pairs. Celebrity deaths. Two of the icons from my childhood passed away today. One as expected, and the other not so unexpected.

Farrah Fawcett of Charlie's Angels fame, and Michael Jackson the king of pop, both died today. Another couple of reminders that we're mere mortals.

Jermaine Jackson, Michael's brother and a convert to Islam said, "May ALLAH be with you Michael" at a press conference this afternoon - Did Michael ever become a Muslim himself?

What Were They Thinking

TURKEY vs ASSYRIANS

The Turkish 'mentality' never ceases to amaze me. Today I found out that the infamous Turkish Courts ruled against the Assyrian monastery St. Gabriel in the dispute over the ("so-called" - quoting AINA) forest, land that lies within the monastery grounds.

"The great surprise for the most of the international representatives was that the Turkish state involved itself in such a 'minor' matter that is vital for a religious community and affects a historic monument."

I have been a sometimes supporter of the current Turkish government; from an international 'perception' stance, I'd give them an A-, and as for internal affairs they probably deserve a C+, but this latest public relations disaster is yet another example of incompetence and a case of 'can't see the forest for the trees' (pun intended)!

Neda and Provocateurs

This video is a pixilated version showing the dying moments of Neda, the 26-year old female who may have been at the protest with her professor, rather than her father. Nevertheless, any dad's worst nightmare ... and on Father's Day no less!

Leaving the emotional sentiments aside, Can the 'provocateurs' be responsible for such a (not a chance or a coincidental) killing by an apparent sniper (shooting her in the heart)? After all, there have been cases in the past of deliberate killing an innocent victim of one's own side simply to blame the other, and achieve the desired/intended reaction as is the case now. Just saying ...

What happened to the 'human' in us? RIP Neda!

UPDATE: Ahmedinejad calls the death of Neda 'suspicious.'

Steve Secret Surgery

In the age of information overload, and finding out what is happening before it even happens, especially in the world of celebrity gossip where any new news is old news if it hadn't been reported already, the ongoing secrecy surrounding Steve Jobs' health status has been remarkable to say the least.

Take for example the news today as first reported by The Wall Street Journal that Jobs had a liver transplant two months ago in Tennessee. It comes as no surprise that Steve Jobs had been ill for the past year, and have had health issues going back a few years (he was treated for pancreatic cancer in 2004). But surgery? Two months ago?

But this post is not about the 'ill-effects' of not publicly disclosing a major illness of a CEO of a major company, or the prognosis, or even what the future holds for Mr. Jobs. This post is about how to keep a secret. Successfully. Even today. I guess it still can be done. And kudos to Steve and his people for giving hope to public figures who wish to remain private when things are good, bad, or indifferent.

Best wishes for Steve Jobs and for a speedy recovery.

what's the meaning of

  • TALK TURKEY

Did you know 'talk turkey' is a US term first recorded in 1824, but is probably much older; one suggestion is that it goes back as far as colonial times.

But the meaning of the phrase seems to have shifted down the years. To start with it meant to speak agreeably, or to say pleasant things; nowadays it usually refers to speaking frankly, discussing hard facts, or getting down to serious business.

But more importantly, did you know that the original settlers in the US called the fowl (turkey) they had known in Europe because it was thought to come from Turkey.

Some also say that Christopher Columbus took some of the wild turkeys of North America back to Europe. Merchants from Turkey may have been trading some of these birds so they came to be called "turkey birds."

So let's 'talk turkey' not only to help fight cultural illiteracy but to exchange information and ideas without regard to radical conspiracy. Have Fun!
